About
An Australian software company with a product habit.
Clever Labs designs and builds software for businesses that expect it to work properly — technically, commercially and over the long term.
We combine experienced engineering, product thinking and clear communication to turn complex ideas and business problems into reliable software.
Based on the Gold Coast, Queensland, we work with clients across Australia and beyond.
What we believe
Good software is not just about writing code.
It is about making the right decisions early, using time and budget well, and building something that remains useful long after launch.
Start with the problem
We listen before we prescribe.
Every engagement starts with understanding what the client is trying to achieve, who the software is for, what constraints matter and what success actually looks like.
If a simpler solution solves the problem better, we will say so.
Quality has to survive production
A successful demo is only the beginning.
We think about reliability, maintainability, security, performance, operating cost and how the product will evolve once real users depend on it.
The goal is software that remains practical to operate and improve, not something that becomes difficult to work with six months later.
Experience where it matters
Software projects involve thousands of decisions that affect cost, delivery speed, reliability and long-term maintainability.
Clever Labs works with experienced engineers and specialist collaborators according to what each project actually requires.
We value sound technical judgement, clear ownership and the right expertise over unnecessary headcount.
Time and budget matter
Engineering decisions have commercial consequences.
We aim to use client time and budget carefully, avoid unnecessary complexity and focus effort where it creates meaningful value.
That means balancing quality with delivery speed, challenging work that does not justify its cost, and keeping technical decisions aligned with the business outcome.
Clear communication
Clients should always understand what is happening, why decisions are being made and where a project stands.
We raise risks early, explain trade-offs clearly and avoid hiding difficult conversations behind technical jargon.
No surprises.
Take ownership
We do not see successful delivery as simply completing a list of tickets.
We care about whether the product works, whether it solves the intended problem and whether the client is left with something they can confidently operate and continue building.
The objective is successful software — not merely delivered code.
The right expertise for the project
Different products require different capabilities.
Depending on the engagement, Clever Labs can bring together experienced specialists across areas such as mobile engineering, backend systems, cloud infrastructure, AI, product development, design and software architecture.
The team around a project should reflect what the project actually needs. That keeps delivery focused, responsibility clear and unnecessary overhead low.
Technology should serve the product
We do not choose technology because it is fashionable.
Sometimes the right solution requires sophisticated architecture, AI systems or highly specialised engineering. Sometimes the better decision is deliberately simpler.
We evaluate technology based on the product's requirements, delivery speed, reliability, maintainability, operating cost and long-term ownership. The best technical decision is the one that makes the product stronger.
We live with our engineering decisions
Clever Labs builds and operates its own software products as well as developing software for clients.
That changes how we think about engineering. Maintainability, infrastructure cost, customer experience, reliability and what happens after launch are not abstract concerns to us — they are problems we deal with in our own products too.
It keeps our engineering practical and our decisions grounded in the realities of running software in production.
How we work with clients
What an engagement actually feels like
Four commitments that hold for every project, whatever it is.
Understand before building
We take the time to understand the problem, the users and the commercial context before committing to a solution.
Keep delivery visible
We prefer meaningful increments of working software over long periods of invisible progress.
That helps technical risks, product assumptions and changing requirements surface earlier, while they are still cheaper to address.
Be direct
If we believe something is unnecessarily complicated, technically risky or unlikely to create enough value, we will say so.
Clients should be able to rely on us for judgement, not just implementation.
Stay accountable
We take responsibility for the quality of the work and for communicating clearly throughout delivery.
Good partnerships are built on trust, consistency and doing what we said we would do.
Leadership
Engineering leadership
Rafael Dixon
Founder & Principal Engineer
Rafael has spent over ten years building production software in senior mobile and software engineering roles, across native mobile apps, backend systems, software architecture and AI-enabled products that have to hold up outside a demo.
He founded Clever Labs on the Gold Coast and leads its engineering practice, working alongside the specialists brought in for each project.
